Tags: open source, Social NetworkingEver wondered how to get those cool little symbols in wall posts, status updates, messages etc… on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc…?
This kind of thing: ☼ ☻☺ ♪ ♫ ♥
Well…. you can either copy them off this page, or use the key sequence next to them:
To get these to work:
You will need to have Num Lock ON
Also, you’ll need to use the number pad – the bunch of numerical keys on the right of the keyboard (on a pc)
Press and hold the “Alt” key (usually bottom left of your keyboard) followed by a number (see below)
Please note, the symbol will only appear AFTER you release the Alt key.

The “feature” that replaced Xx with Fx has been fixed in OS 3.0!
Another thing I have noticed is with “lol” – Before the OS 3.0 update, if I typed lol, it would change it to UPPERCASE. Now, however, it leaves it as i typed it.
I recently reset my settings in Visual Studio which, irritatingly, made my line numbers disappear.
To re-instate the line numbers, there is a simple process:
Click:
Tools > Options > Text Editor > All Languages > General
On the right, under Display section, check Line numbers (see below)
Click Ok.

I recently acquired a PC at my new job where there was an existing installation of Visual Studio.
This was fine, however it was set up for a VB.net developer.
Whilst I do use VB.net, I didn’t want my VS set up this way.
I wanted to re-instate that lovely screen you see when you fresh install VS (below)

To do this, simply click:
Tools > Import and Export Settings Editor
Click Reset all settings
I didn’t backup my settings as the guy working here before had gone… But this screen gives you the option to.
And there we are.
All settings can be reset to a theme of your choice.
Notepad2 is my favourite text editor.
Eventually, I’ll get round to writing a post all about it.
Until then, you can read the Wikipedia page – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notepad2
You can download Notepad2 from http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html
Find c:\windows\notepad.exe and c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe (use Windows Explorer)
Change the owner of both files to “Administrators”
In case you are unsure…
Right click on notepad.exe, select properties, select the “Security” panel.
Click “Advanced”

In the resulting dialog, select the Owner tab, then click “Edit…”
Highlight “Administrators” and then click Ok.
Then, back in the Security panel (from start of step 1) click on the Edit button (below list of groups)
Select the Administrators group (see bottom left image below) then click the Full control checkbox, which should select all the other checkboxes.
Click ok.
Rename notepad2.exe to notepad.exe.
Fairly self explanatory – rename wherever you have unzipped notepad2.zip
Move the newly named notepad.exe into c:\windows and c:\windows\system32
Replace the existing notepad.exe with the new one.
Done
Windows will now use notepad2 as it would of used standard notepad.
Tags: notepad2, vistaOne big thing for me with regards to the iPhone Microsoft Exchange integration is the inability to create and manage folders.
I am one of those people that religiously file emails away once dealt with – for example, I have an "eBay" folder, with "buying" and "selling" sub folders for all the emails relating to my purchases and sales.
The iPhone (unlike Windows mobile devices) has no ability to create, delete or rename folders on the Exchange server, which is a bit of a shame.
I was hoping they would include this in the OS 3.0 update.
Tags: exchange, iPhoneAlthough the official site does not have a link indicating this, the OS 3.0 is available for download.
To download, load iTunes, under devices (I take it you’ve plugged in your iPhone) click on your iPhone.

In the summary tab, click the Update button… voila!
Today, is OS 3.0 launch day. Or so we were led to believe by Apple…
There has been much confusion about the release date / time for the iPhone OS 3.0 update.
This is because the official Apple site suddenly displayed that it was available on the 18th (see below)
That’s what a bunch of people on twitter suddenly started tweeting….
and, displaying the URL to prove it!
This apparent update, created a whole whirlwind on various news sites about a delay… however, it seems that this date is correct.
In Singapore.
If we take a look at the URL in the address bar, where this date is displayed:
Yes, the /sg/ represents the Singapore version of the site, which, due to the international date line, will receive the update tomorrow.
Checking the www.apple.com/uk/iphone/softwareupdate site, shows what I would expect: Available June 17th.
What time, however, is anyone’s guess.
I’ve heard rumours of 3pm, 6pm, 9pm…. so I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Tags: iPhoneIn the last couple of weeks, Facebook has finally started supporting usernames… So instead of giving people long urls, with your user id (a long number) you will now be able to give:
www.facebook.com/alexjamesbrown
(like the way MySpace did it from the outset)
To get yours, go to:
www.facebook.com/username
