I tend to use the personal hotspot (tethering) feature on my iPhone every week or so (while out at meetings, it’s handy to connect laptop if there’s no wifi available)

Recently, I stumbled across Onavo

Essentially this compresses mobile data before it’s sent to your device, to reduce your data usage, and speed up your browsing etc…

I installed the app, and it creates a profile on your phone, to point your connection

It does this by installing a configuration profile that overrides your normal Carrier’s APN settings, redirecting traffic through its AWS based cloud. There, the assets are downloaded using inexpensive wired access, evaluated and compressed, before being sent on to the Carrier (in my case, Three) – compressed.

However…
After a couple of weeks of using it, I noticed my personal Hotspot option had suddenly disappeared.
I was outraged.
Immediately, I thought Three had taken it away from my package, and tweeted them accordingly…

Three assured me this wasn’t the case….

So I did some thinking, and remembered Onavo.

I uninstalled the app using this method, restarted the phone, and voila!
My personal hotspot option is back!

Seems this isn’t just limited to the Three network, nor do I seem to be the only one, according to their support page:

I made an interesting, if somewhat irritating discovery earlier today.

I use Google Sync to enable email (and contacts, calendar etc..) to be pushed to my iPhone.

As I mentioned back in June, with the release of iOS 4, you can have multiple Exchange accounts set up (Google Sync on the iPhone takes advantage of the Exchange protocol)

<img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 0px 25px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="" border="0" alt="Delete label shown, when sliding finger on "Exchange" account (Google Apps)" align="left" src="http://www.alexjamesbrown.com/wp-content/uploads/iphoneDeleteDoesntDeleteInGoogleApps1.jpg" width="180" height="271" />

However, I’ve only just noticed that when viewing mail, either in All Inboxes, or a specific mailbox, sliding my finger across a spam message and choosing Delete doesn’t actually delete the message.
It Archives it.

This is pretty annoying, since this is how I like to filter out a lot of crap from my inbox on the move.

The spam filters in Google are great, but every now and then, you will always get an email through that you just can’t be bothered to read.

Deleting like this always seemed a good idea. Until the other day, when I just happened to look in “All Mail” on my Google Mail screen.
I noticed that the deleted mail was still there! It simply had it’s Inbox label removed (archiving)

See images below:

Here’s the original set of mails:

I’ve “deleted” the mail using my iPhone. Sure, it’s no longer in my inbox….

In “All Mail” – offending message is still there!

Surely, the Bin icon inside a message deletes?

The same applies if you go into a message, and click on the even more confusingly graphic Bin icon (shown below)
The message is simply Archived.

Normal Gmail

If you sync a “normal” gMail account using the method to the left, it gives you better idea of what “deleting” actually does.

On a message in a “normal” gMail Account, sliding your finger over the message has a more accurate button displayed.

Conclusion

It would seem there is no way to move a message to the Bin (actually deleting it) from the iPhone mail application.

I really hope this is something Apple fix- as I do like to actually delete mail while on the move, and don’t want to have to fire up the mobile version of the site every time!

With the release of iOS 4, you can have multiple Exchange accounts set up to push Mail, Contacts and Calendars to your iPhone.

I already have my personal email set up as an Exchange account on my iPhone, which works great, however, at work, we use Google Apps for Mail (and calendars etc..)

Currently, I have to use iCal to get my work calendar from Google Apps shown on the iPhone, and there’s no way of syncing my work contacts, as well as my personal contacts from my hosted Exchange account.

Since Google Sync on the iPhone takes advantage of the Exchange protocol, we weren’t able to use both at the same time, until iOS .
This is great news, as it means I can now have both my Google Apps, and hosted Exchange accounts syncing properly on my iPhone.

One big thing for me with regards to the iPhone Microsoft Exchange integration is the inability to create and manage folders.

I am one of those people that religiously file emails away once dealt with – for example, I have an "eBay" folder, with "buying" and "selling" sub folders for all the emails relating to my purchases and sales.

The iPhone (unlike Windows mobile devices) has no ability to create, delete or rename folders on the Exchange server, which is a bit of a shame.

I was hoping they would include this in the OS 3.0 update.

Today, is OS 3.0 launch day. Or so we were led to believe by Apple…
There has been much confusion about the release date / time for the iPhone OS 3.0 update.

This is because the official Apple site suddenly displayed that it was available on the 18th (see below)

That’s what a bunch of people on twitter suddenly started tweeting….
and, displaying the URL to prove it!

This apparent update, created a whole whirlwind on various news sites about a delay… however, it seems that this date is correct.
In Singapore.

If we take a look at the URL in the address bar, where this date is displayed:

Yes, the /sg/ represents the Singapore version of the site, which, due to the international date line, will receive the update tomorrow.

Checking the www.apple.com/uk/iphone/softwareupdate site, shows what I would expect: Available June 17th.

What time, however, is anyone’s guess.

I’ve heard rumours of 3pm, 6pm, 9pm…. so I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Press and hold the home button
Press the lock / on / off button on the top.

Below is an image illustrating this a bit better.

The image is then stored in your camera roll, and you can get it the same way you get at all the other photos on your iPhone.
